Years 3 and 4

Welcome to Lower Key Stage Two, the home of years 3 and 4! As children move into Key stage two, they are supported and encouraged to begin working more independently as well as problem-solving with their peers to deepen their knowledge across the curriculum and continue to make connections between what they have learnt.

Year 3 and 4 staff team (ID 2075)

Reading is at the heart of all we do in Year 3 and 4, including focused phonics learning and lots of reading for meaning and pleasure, as we aim for all children to become confident, enthusiastic and fluent readers. We also have a strong emphasis on teaching multiplication tables to support fluency in maths.

Over recent terms, children have become experts across the curriculum through our exciting projects: as ambitious historians they explored the Romans and Ancient Egyptians and in geography they became expert guides to our own local area, as well as exploring rivers across Europe. In art, they delved into the beauty of the expressionist movement, as well as exploring the artist Van Gogh, using these to inspire their own art. Through their design and technology learning, children designed and sewed some beautiful hand puppets in year 3, and some delicious culinary dishes in year 4. Children also enjoy learning French for the first time: learning basic greetings, colours and numbers to help them hold simple conversations.

We bring learning to life through exciting experiences in school, including visitors coming in and the opportunity to go out to explore all that Oxford has to offer. Children visit the museums in Oxford, and have the opportunity to go on an overnight trip to explore the beautiful nature and surroundings at Hill End in year 4, as well as making use of our beautiful school grounds!
